A Statement About What I Do
My name is Natalie Shugailo, my passion is art, and my subject matter is what I describe as childrens books you shouldn't read your children. I primarily paint with acrylics on various surfaces, but will on occasion use oils, realistic charcoal portraits are also something I really enjoy, and I work in a large range of sizes. I am currently focusing on works of art that have an emphasis on flatness while still creating an illusion of space. I rely on outlines, solid blocks of color, and minimal backgrounds to create graphic clean pieces that have direct almost in your face messages. The meanings often take more than one glance to figure out, and they are often macabre or scewed in some way. My main goal is to have something in each piece I create that makes the viewer almost uncomfortable, something that forces the viewer to really look at the painting and find some inner connection to it. I have also been replacing natural body parts with odd objects such as inner tubes, piping, and peg-like or mannequin like appendages. All of my pieces tend to have a central "character" or "observer" who is experiencing the other elements of the painting, and who is the primary inhabitant of the environment around them. I have also run with the idea of facelessness and what it means not to have a face, the lack of identity and the inabilty to experience the senses. In short my artwork is loaded, and I challenge you to pull the trigger. (almost all pieces on this site are negotiable for sale, and I also do commissions. You can reach me at 708-369-3659, e-mail me at [email protected]., or even better send me a comment or request through the link right here on my site, all comments go directly to me and I will respond to them in a timely manner.)
